Protesters in Kuyga in Gqeberha took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday morning to express their grievances over a lack of electricity.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says at 2 am residents blockaded Mission Road with burning tyres and trees.
She says they also set alight street lamp poles.
Public Order Police (POPS) is currently on the scene where a group of about 100 protesters are braving the cold to continue their protest.
Mission Road remains closed and motorists are urged to use alternative routes.
