A Kwazulu Natal policeman has been arrested in Port Elizabeth on a charge of rape.
Police spokesperson, captain Stanley Jarvis, says 37-year-old sergeant, Msawenkosi Mbambo, was arrested on Thursday after a charge of rape was laid by a woman who apparently accepted a lift from him and some colleagues on Wednesday night.
Jarvis says the alleged incident occurred in a room in a bungalow at a seaside resort in the city.
He says the suspect and three colleagues were driving in a marked police vehicle with three females inside when they allegedly stopped to question the teenager, who was walking in Summerstrand, about why she was walking around late at night.
Jarvis says Mbambao appeared in court on Friday and was released on bail of R800.
The matter has also been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
