The 28-year-old Luvuyo Jonas who was arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Andile Ntuthela affectionately known as 'Lulu' has been described as a violent, problematic member of society in Kariega.

This is according to Kwanobuhle ward 47 resident, Thobeka Peyi, who attended the court proceedings on Tuesday at the local Magistrate's Court.

Peyi was part of the large crowd who picketed outside the court in support of the victim's family.

She said she wasn't surprised that Jonas was linked to the murder, because she expected him to one day kill his parents as he had threatened them on several occasions before.

"Ude wayenza umnqamlezo emibini eyardini, wathi lo ngowakho mama lo ngowakho tata and ndizokunibulala. Ngelixesha esenza le nto wathi kukho into ethathayo endlebeni yakhe ba ethi makabulale umama no tata wakhe [He even planted two crosses in the yard and he told his parents that it was for when he kills them. He told them that something was whispering into his ear instructing him to kill his mom and dad]," Peyi said.

Jonas was arrested last week Friday on a charge of malicious damage to property after his mom reported him for burning his blankets on the 31st of March.

Police spokesperson, Priscilla Naidu said that his family indicated to them that they suspected he was involved in criminal activities and when police searched in his home in Matana Street, they discovered bloodstains on the inside and outside of his home.

Naidu said Jonas was hospitalised for mental observation following the incident with the burning blankets and police were only able to detain and question him on Friday.

She said during questioning, new information emerged and police returned to the house with K9 sniffer dogs where they made the grim discovery.

'Lulu's' badly burnt body was buried in a shallow grave in the yard.

Outraged members of the LGBTQI+ community flanked by Kwanobuhle residents gathered outside the court building to show solidarity with 'Lulu' who was a well-known member of the LGBTQI+ community.

Police suspect that this was part of the motive for the brutal murder.

A close friend of 'Lulu', Sixolile Ndlondlo described him as a loving person who wouldn't hurt anyone.

Ndlondlo was one of the organisers of Tuesday's protest and spoke to Algoa FM News on Monday after hearing about the discovery of 'Lulu's' body.

His distraught family members also attended Tuesday's court proceedings.

'Lulu's' cousin, Ncebakazi Tshinyanza who spoke on behalf of the family said they were deeply hurt but relieved to hear that Jonas would not be out on bail.

"I don't want to lie we are saddened by the matter but the community is making us strong and giving us hope that there will be light again in our family," she said.

Jonas abandoned his bid for bail and is due back in court on the first of June.
