The development of a R2bn rand wind farm in the Kouga district has moved a step closer.
The municipality's standing committee on Infrastructure Planning and Development has approved a rezoning application by the developers, Red Cap Kouga, but the final nod must still come from the Kouga Council.
The first phase of the Red Cap Kouga wind farm project will 32 turbines erected on land close to Oyster Bay and will 80MW of power.
The project will also benefit local communities through a broad-based ownership scheme.
Mark Tanton of the Cape-based Red Cape Investments says his pleased with Thursday's decision even though there's still one more hurdle to clear.
He says they "had suspected that the municipality would support it" based on the fact that a quarter of the wind farm will be owned by people in the municipal area.
Tanton says the Kouga Municipality also expressed their desire to help us if there are any other issues going forward with the wind farm.
"We are obviously very happy that we can work closel with the (Kouga) municipality towards the construction of the wind farm," he said.
