The Kouga Municipality says it has declared the region a Local Disaster Area.
The declaration was made at a Special Mayoral Committee meeting this afternoon.
Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said heavy torrential rains over the past week had severely damaged the region's infrastructure and initial estimates are more than R97m.
He says the estimate includes damage to roads, water, sewerage and storm water infrastructure.
Koerat says an official verification of the damage would commence tomorrow and will be done by consultants appointed by the Cacadu District Municipality.
The Mayor said the resolution that Kouga be declared a Local Disaster Area, as well as the draft business plan outlining the damage, would be submitted to the district municipality in order for them to follow all due processes for Kouga to be declared a National Disaster Area.
"This process is necessary if Kouga is to obtain disaster relief funding from national government for the rehabilitation of the affected areas," he said.
