Knysna has enough water in storage left for 27 days after the Knysna and Gouna Rivers have stopped flowing.
The two rivers provide water to Knysna’s Akkerkloof catchment dam.
The Knysna Municipality implemented level three water restrictions with immediate effect on Monday as the the Akkerkloof dam reached 39% of capacity.
The water restrictions dictate that potable water is only for human consumption and there will be no watering of gardens or washing of cars or boats. It also restricts both domestic and business water consumption to 20Kl per month.
Anyone using more than 20Kl will be identified and water restrictive devices will be installed on their properties while a 75% punitive tariff will be added to the offendors municipal water bill
Knysna municipality spokesperson, Fran Kirsten, said Thursday that the town's water crisis had worsened since the restrictions were implemented.
She says they're not able to pump water to the catchment dam because the river is too low.
Kirsten said the mayor, Eleanore Bouw-Spies, will speak to the top 10 "water abusers" in town to reduce consumption.
"We need people to reduce their water usage. Now that the rivers has stopped flowing it is even more urgent then it was on Monday."
