Knysna will next month host the first ever mass same-sex wedding in Africa.
Sixteen gay and lesbian couples will be chosen to tie the knot in what is described as the wedding of a lifetime on the 29th of April.
The executive mayor of Knysna, Georlene Wolmarans will conduct the event.
The event is hosted by the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival that takes place in Knysna annually. The couples being chosen for the wedding will win wedding packages including dresses and suits, rings and a weekend honeymoon. Wolmarans said she is honoured to have been chosen to officiate the marriages of the 16 couples and is delighted that Knysna was selected to host the very first lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sex mass wedding in the country.
Wolmarans says she believes that same-sex couples should have access to all the benefits enjoyed by different-sex couples as the
"South African Constitution clearly states that all citizens have the same rights and does not provide for any discrimination on any grounds.”she said
