Knysna mayor, Georlene Wolmarans, has expressed her dismay at the arrest of a deputy school principal for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.
Speaking to Algoa FM News, mayor Wolmarans said the was shocked that such an incident could occur in a place where children are supposed to be safe.
The 52-year-old teacher, who was arrested on Wednesday night, appeared in court on Friday.
He was arrested after being caught red-handed by the principal who alerted the child's mother who laid the charge with the police.
Mayor Wolmarans also praised the school principal.
"I think the school principal must be commended it could have been so easy for the principal to just turn a blind eye and put the name of the school ahead of the victim's but this did not happen. This gives us hope that not all teachers are like that and that some are willing to stand up for what is right" he said.
The teacher was remanded in custody pending a formal bail application that will be held on 29 August 2013 at the Knysna magistrates' court.
