SANParks has confirmed that the Knysna seahorses are being threatened in their natural habitat, the Knysna Estuary.
According SANParks, Nandi Mgwadlamba, law enforcement agencies are keeping a close eye on the area.
Mgwadlamba told Algoa FM News that the sea horses were recently being caught during low tide with the use of fishing net.
She says there was another incident in which a suspect tried to sell Knysna Seahorses but that local authorities could not confirm how the suspect managed to catch them.
She asked the community to be on the lookout for any sinister activities and to contact the local police or SanParks if any such activities are witnessed.
The Knysna seahorse is an endangered species and protected under the South African Environmental Management Act.
