A prison inmate and a Western Cape Correctional Officer are in hospital following a violent incident at Knysna Correctional Services Centre on Sunday afternoon.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, both men sustained serious injuries during the attack.
He said a handmade sharp object was used as a weapon.
"About 2.30pm (Sunday) we had to send reinforcements from our Public Order Policing Unit in George after an incident occurred at the Knysna Correctional Centre," he said.
Pojie said that they had to intervene and stabilise the situation after one of the "on duty officials" was attacked by an inmate.
"Both sustained severe injuries and have been hospitalised. They are still in hospital receiving treatment," Pojie said.
He said that circumstances surrounding the attack are still under investigation.
