Kidnapping case against GQ woman transferred to New Law Courts due to safety concerns

Reihana Leander

The bail application of the Gqeberha woman who allegedly arranged the kidnapping of her boyfriend's son was postponed in the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The state alleges that Reihana Leander, 44, fetched the 18-year-old at her boyfriend's home on 7 January and that the pair drove to an unknown location.

Here, the teenager was allegedly handed over to Leander's accomplices where he was held hostage for hours.

During Leander's appearance in court, her attorney, Raynard McLaren asked that the matter be transferred to the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court due to "security concerns."

When probed, McLaren only said the security concerns pertain to his client and the "states case."

He also told the court that he needed time to further consult with his client.

State prosecutor Helenique Brandt formally requested that the matter be transferred to the Magistrates Court.

This request was granted.

The police previously told the media that the teenager was released after hostage negotiators stepped in.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant-Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana also said the accused allegedly conceded that she handed over the victim to her acquaintances.

Leander's VW Golf 7 GTI, which was allegedly used in the commission of the kidnapping, was later found abandoned.

Police have since confiscated the vehicle.

Members of the Gqeberha based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Bethelsdorp Detectives, and Gqeberha Hostage negotiators worked together to ensure the arrest of the accused.

The case was remanded to 23 January.
