Kidnapping accused await outcome of bail bid

A Gqeberha man linked to the kidnapping of a Chinese businessman will have to wait until next week to hear if he will be released on bail.

Nyamezeli Tete, 59, has been charged in connection with the April kidnapping of Chinese national Running Chen, from his business premises in North End, in Gqeberha.

He has also been charged with the kidnapping of Sonam Gajjar who was taken from her driveway in Kariega, in March.

Both Chen and Gajjar were released after hefty ransom amounts had been paid.

Tete testified in support of his release on bail in the Chen case, while State Prosecutor Bennie Wilson called two Hawks Detectives to the stand to give evidence to oppose his bail bid.

During his application, defence attorney Zolile Ngqeza said Tete was willing to adhere to strict bail conditions and would not attempt to destroy evidence or interfere with state witnesses.

The State said Tete had previously violated his parole conditions, attempted to evade arrest, and had the means to travel nationally.

Tete is out on parole for a murder charge.

His co-accused in the Chen case is his cousin, Mzonoxolo Grwayibana.

Grwayibana was arrested on 16 May and appeared in court again on Tuesday.

Previously, Grwayibana was released on bail of R3 000.

His case has been postponed to 9 September.

The judgment in Tete's bail application will be handed down on 24 July.
