A suspected cash in transit robber was shot dead by police in Tsolo on Monday while a robbery was in progress on the N2.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa says upon arrival at the scene members attached to the Tactical Response Team received information that some suspects ran into the bushes.
She says 11 suspects were involved in the CIT attempt of which four were arrested.
During the chase one suspect fled in a Nissan NP200 that was later abandoned by the suspects, with explosives inside.
Lieutenant Colonel Mawisa says the investigation led them to several houses at the Sidwadweni Administrative Area in Tsolo where four unlicensed rifles, explosives and explosive devices, a bag full of clothes, 161 rifle cartridges and seven magazines were recovered.
She says a Toyota Fortuner, Etios, Ford Eco Sport and Hyundai Getz were also confiscated by SAPS.
According to police when the TRT members searched the premises they spotted two suspicious men who were immediately arrested after explosives were found in their possession.
Lieutenant Colonel Mawisa says two other suspects, carrying a rifle and a bag, fled on foot into the bushes and started shooting at the TRT members who were in hot pursuit.
She says one suspect was shot dead and another arrested.
Six suspects, allegedly involved in the robbery are still on the run.
The four in custody are between the ages of 33 and 55 and are expected to appear in court soon.
They will face charges of attempted CIT, attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles, unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The Hawks have taken over the investigation.
