Kidnapped GQ woman back home safely

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said that the 41-year-old woman who was kidnapped nearly a week ago is back home safely.

In a brief statement, the Hawks said this was “due to sufficient pressure  and efforts of a multidisciplinary team of investigators and the support from the media and community.”

She was reunited with her family on Thursday night at around 21.30.

Rajathi Gnanaraj was abducted outside her workplace in Deal Party in full view of her husband last Friday night.

Police said the couple was sitting in their vehicle in Grahamstown Road when they were approached by seven suspects who were armed.

They smashed the vehicle's window when Gnanaraj would not open the car door and hauled her out into a silver Toyota Corolla which sped off in the direction of New Brighton.

The other suspects got into a red Haval and drove off, leaving the kidnapped woman's husband behind.

A ransom demand was subsequently made.

In the latest statement, the Hawks said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

“As such, it is respectfully requested that the family and the victim be given the necessary space and privacy to recover and calm down after this traumatic experience.

“Day in and day out police teams are working tirelessly, following all leads to ensure that justice is served.”

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
