A former admin clerk at the Department of Home Affairs in Cleary Park in Gqeberha has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment for fraud.

Hawks Spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana says 32-year-old Tony Stout was sentenced in the Gqeberha new law courts on Thursday.

She says between 2018 and 2019 Stout used the ID details of South African citizens to alter the photos of foreign nationals to fraudulently provide them with SA passports.

Stout was arrested in March of 2021 and released on bail of R500.

He made several court appearances over the years and was Thursday found guilty and convicted on nine charges of fraud and contravention of Identification Act 68 of 1977.

Stout was not given the option of a fine and sent straight to prison.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
