An investigation into a fatal mob justice incident in Kariega from over two years ago has run cold.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the 27-year-old Thembalethu Mlilwana was allegedly beaten to death in Kwanobuhle, a few days before Christmas in 2019.
She says Mlilwana allegedly broke into a man's house in the early hours of the morning on the 22nd of December.
The owner woke up from the sound of breaking glass and spooked Mlilwana who fled the scene.
Captain Swart says while the owner was calling police to report the matter his neighbour informed him that community members were assaulting someone in the street.
The homeowner positively identified Mlilwana as the person who broke into his house.
To date, not a single person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault to come forward.
