The gunshot victim who died at the Provincial Hospital in Kariega on Sunday morning has been identified by the police.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says he was 30-year-old David Roman, who was wounded when two men opened fire on him and another man while they were standing in front of a house in Blikkiesdorp.
Roman was declared dead on arrival at the hospital after he was dropped off shortly after 6 AM, apparently by three acquaintances, who rushed him to the hospital in a black Ford Fiesta.
One of the three, however, is accused of brutally assaulting a nurse during an altercation over who should remove the wounded man from the car.
The assault of the nurse sparked widespread condemnation from many quarters, while night duty trauma unit staff refused to work on Sunday following threats against their lives.
The Eastern Cape Health Department said it beefed up security at the Hospital, while trauma patients were diverted to the Letitia Bam Health Facility.
SAPS said no charge was laid yet in respect of the assault of the nurse.
Meanwhile, in a statement on Monday, Naidu said Roman's murder was gang-related and is being investigated by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
She said the motive for the shooting was not known at this stage and no arrests were made.
