The K9 unit in Nelson Mandela Bay arrested a 34-year-old man who was allegedly part of a group digging up cables in Burt Drive in Adcockvale.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the K9 unit was patrolling so-called hotspot areas when they noticed the group digging in the early hours of Thursday morning.
She says when the suspects spotted police they ran into the bushes and Mufasa and his fellow K9 officer Rex, pursued.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says Mufasa managed to apprehend the one suspect who had an axe in his possession.
She says the other suspects managed to escape by jumping over a boundary wall.
Janse Van Rensburg said hacksaws, a pick and a shovel was also recovered.
The suspect will be charged with tampering, damaging and/or destroying essential infrastructure and is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate court this week.
