Three men are expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrates Court on Wednesday following their arrest on the N2 on Monday after police found guns and ammunition hidden in the panel of the vehicle they were driving.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says police received a tip-off about a blue Toyota Run X that was transporting firearms.
She says the K9 unit was roped in and the vehicle, which was travelling towards Gqeberha, was spotted and pulled over near the salt pans on the N2.
A thorough search was conducted of the vehicle but when nothing was found, K9 officer Bentley, who specialises in explosives was roped in.
Captain Swart says the Alsatian, Bentley, immediately reacted at the front passenger door and the panel was then stripped.
She says inside police found a silencer, a hunting knife, a 375 rifle barrel and 375 rounds of ammunition all hidden inside the door panel.
Police also confiscated the wiper blade cover where a rifle stock was hidden.
The three suspects aged between 24 and 44 will be charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
