Eleven suspects appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in Komani on Monday on charges of copper cable theft.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said the men, aged between 25 and 50, are from Johannesburg and were arrested on Friday.
She said SAPS Tylden near Komani spotted the suspects on a gravel road near the railway station and called other SAPS to the scene. They were taken to the local police station for questioning.
Mgolodela said police later recovered a large quantity of copper cable, weighing 2848 kilograms and with an estimated value of R850 000.
She said the case against the men was postponed to Friday for a bail application, and the Hawks investigation continues.
