A man from Jeffrey's Bay has been arrested for the illegal possession of abalone with a street value of more than R62 000 in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park.
SANparks spokesperson, JP Louw says rangers suspected a poaching activity at Grootbank, west of Nature’s Valley.
He says after noticing the patrol, four divers came out from the sea and started running.
Louw says the rangers immediately called for backup, and one of the suspects was apprehended following a chase.
He says the other three suspects ran into thick bushes that made it difficult to continue their pursuit.
The 44-year-old suspect is being detained in Plettenberg Bay and is expected to appear in court soon.
Police confiscated 34kg of abalone.
