Jailed ANC councilors desperate for freedom

Jailed ANC councilor Andile Lungisa is expected to file an urgent bail application in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The now former councillor was sentenced to an effective two years direct imprisonment for assaulting DA councillor, Rano Kayser, with a glass jug during the infamous Council brawl of 2016.

Lungisa lost an application for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence, and has appointed a new lawyer,  Alwyn Griebenouw to now petition the High Court.

Based on this, they are now applying for bail, pending the outcome of the High Court petition.

Kayser testified during the trial saying doctors had told him he was lucky to be alive.

He said besides suffering physical injuries and side-effects, including memory loss and constant headaches, he felt humiliated by the situation.

Kayser told Magistrate Morne Cannon, that even his children were teased following the incident.

Lungisa also testified in mitigation of sentence, telling the court that he sympathised with Kayser.

However, the ANC councilor said that he was remorseful that Kayser was injured during the heated Council meeting, but did not admit intentionally smashing a glass jug over Kayser's head.

Lungisa is the second ANC councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay to be jailed this year.

Ward 20 councillor Bongo Nombiba was sentenced in April to five years in jail following his conviction for fraud and money laundering in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.

Nombiba was, however, acquitted of two other charges of corruption after he was arrested by the Hawks in 2016 for fleecing Municipal funds meant for a township NGO.

He has since indicated that he will lodge an application for leave to appeal his five-year sentence on the 4th of June.
