J'Bay woman 'disappears' with a year's worth of stokvel money

A 38-year-old stokvel treasurer from Jeffreys Bay has been arrested for theft after failing to deposit members monthly contributions into the club account.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli, says a case of robbery was opened after a member realised their treasurer had failed to deposit a year's worth of contributions amounting to over 91 thousand rand.

He says she was arrested on Wednesday morning and is due to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of theft.

Nkohli says stokvel members need to be careful who they trust with their money and should use electronic banking methods instead.

He says this case then soon appeared to be linked to a missing persons report that was opened on Tuesday.

A 38-year-old woman, who turned out to be the suspect, was reported missing by her husband.

On Monday she reported to the Graaff Reinet Police Station where she gave reasons for her sudden disappearance.
