Is there a new syndicate targeting SASSA beneficiaries?

The Inkatha Freedom Party said on Tuesday it had received confirmation that a new syndicate was targeting recipients of social grants meant for poor South Africans.

There have been reports of widespread cloning, especially in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The IFP says the problem is nationwide and has left hundreds of vulnerable citizens without their monthly lifeline.

It urged those affected to complete affidavits and submit these with copies of their national identity document and their SASSA/SAPO cards at SAPO outlets.

SASSA meanwhile assured beneficiaries that they are working closely with law enforcement agencies to deal with perpetrators of these crimes and good progress is being made.

Acting CEO, Abraham Mahlangu says a number of arrests have already been made in this regard.

In the event of card fraud, the genuine beneficiary is reimbursed by SASSA for any loss once it has been confirmed through an investigation. In order to report card fraud, the beneficiary should bring their ID document to the post office where they will be assisted to complete an affidavit. There is no beneficiary who will not receive a grant they are entitled to, due to a fraud they didn’t partake in. The payment will be backdated to the month the error or fraudulent transaction occurred.
