The Department of Correctional Services says daily checks are done at St Albans prison for contraband, which include cellphones and other devices.
That's according to St Albans Area Commissioner, Mandla Jam, after it emerged that Jayde Panayiotou murder accused, Sizwezakhe Vumazonke, may still be active on his Facebook page.
It is also possible that someone else may have access to his account.
Jam said today that prison cells are checked on a daily basis.
"On a daily basis we search for phones and confiscate them, but because there are offenders who work outside and sneak them in. We still search them daily"
With respect to Vumazonke's particular case, Jam offered the following response.
"We cant deny that he might be having access to a cellphone or even his friends who might have access to his social network"
