Specsavers Ironman 70.3 South Africa organisers say their safety procedures cannot be questioned in the wake of the deaths of two athletes at Sunday's race in East London.
Thirty seven year-old Berton Bosman from Pretoria and 29-year-old Kevin Staessen of Johannesburg died during the swim and are believed to have suffered cardiac arrest.
Speaking on AlgoaFM, Ironman spokesman Michael Flanagan said it was a real tragedy as neither athlete had any prior medical history.
"Both athletes had no reported medical history or history of heart condition so we are still waiting to hear what the final cause of death was. It is a big loss to the families and a big loss to the Ironman family, it surely put a big damper on the weekend" Flanagan said.
Bart Aernouts of Belgium won the men's race with PE's Kyle Buckingham the first South African finisher in 7th place.
Jodie Swallow defended her title in winning the ladies race.
