The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating a case of murder following the death of a 62-year-old man in Keiskammahoek near Alice on Monday.
Police spokesperson Captain Nkosikho Mzuku, said this followed the arrest of twenty suspects for public violence during a service delivery protest.
Captain Mzuku says over two-thousand community members barricaded the public road in the town's CBD with burning tryes, stones damaging police and IPID vehicles.
He says Public Order Police members were summoned to manage the situation and dispersed the angry crowd with rubber bullets.
"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident is not yet known. IPID is investigating a case of murder," he said.
Captain Mzuku said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
"Twenty suspects were arrested for public violence. They are due to appear in court the Keiskammahoek Magistrate's court soon facing charges of public violence," he added.
