The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that an investigation has been launched after a police officer from Oudtshoorn shot and killed a man at the Bridgton police station.
According to IPID spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu, they are aware of the incident that happened on Saturday evening.
He says the deceased arrived at the police station to lodge a complaint.
The officer on duty alleges that the deceased was under the influence of alcohol after which he was asked to return to the charge office when he was sober.
Raburabu says a preliminary investigation suggests that the man allegedly stabbed the police officer in the head and arm with a knife after which he was shot dead.
The officer is still being treated in a hospital for his injuries.
