Inxeba: Critically acclaimed and criticized film released nationwide (WATCH)

Extra security measures have been put in place at Nu Metro cinemas for today's nationwide release of the critically acclaimed film, Inxeba- The Wound.

This after several groups threatened to protest at the screening of the film while Nu Metro asked followers on their Twitter account to come out in their numbers to support the film

The movie, which has won 19 international awards, deals with a Xhosa man's right to passage as he goes into the bush to be circumcised and has been given an age restriction of 16. The Film and Publication Board rated the film in June 2017 already, but have now received several complaints, asking for the rating to be increased to 18.

Those complaining claim the film is insensitive and distorting the Xhosa culture.

Producer, Cait Pansegrouw, told Algoa FM News that they were extremely disappointed in the way some South Africans have reacted to the film.

She says due to the film's controversial theme it took them four years to get the necessary funding to go ahead.

Pansegrouw says the film was eventually financed by four different countries including South Africa, France, the Netherlands and Germany.

Inxeba was shortlisted this year for the 2018 Acadamy Awards, in the Best Foreign Film Category.
