Investigation launched after alleged racism incident at well known PE school

The Eastern Cape Education Department says they have programmes in place to address issues like racism at schools.

Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, confirmed that they had received reports this week of an alleged racism incident at a well-known Port Elizabeth school.

The school also wrote to parents on Tuesday, apologising unreservedly for the hurt and anger caused by an Instagram post by one of their learners.

In the letter, seen by Algoa FM News, the school also condemned any form of racism, saying that it's dealing with the matter.

Mtima says these programmes to deal with issues of racism at schools, among other things, are being run through the District offices.

"As a Department we have established a program that is made to address those issues, those programmes are reportedly yielding good results for the Department and as such, the District concerned has been reporting to us and providing us with the progress they have made, which is really something exciting, because at the end of the day as the Departement we have got an obligation to breed citizens irrespective of their race gender and/or culture" he said.

Mtima says their internal programmes include processes to bring parties together under one roof to address issues at schools.

He says there are also dialogues to address other issues like bullying and fighting at schools.

"We also have programmes that are meant to create social cohesion where people realise that we are all human beings, irrespective of how we appear" he added.
