The investigation into the death of stock car racing champion Mario De Ridder is at an advanced stage.
This is according to local police who responded to an inquiry from Algoa FM News.
De Ridder was killed following an accident on the N2 towards Jeffreys Bay near the van Stadens Bridge on the 7th of June 2021.
The stock car racer was allegedly driving an Audi S7 that belonged to murder accused Reinhardt Leach, who is currently awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Vicki Terblanche.
It is alleged that they had a flat tyre and Leach, who miraculously escaped the accident, got out to inspect the vehicle.
According to police, a truck ploughed into the Audi critically injuring De Ridder who later died in hospital.
A second passenger was also injured.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says once their investigation is complete, a case docket will be forwarded to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for a decision.
A case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving is under investigation.
During De Ridder's funeral, his half-brother JP Pretorius said they were frustrated by how the accident scene was handled by police, and expressed the family's disappointment that the truck driver had not been arrested.
The family also hired a legal representative to look into the accident on their behalf.
De Ridder's son is also linked to the death of Vicki Terblanche and has been given a "204" status to testify against his co-accused.
