An official from the Department of Correctional Services has been admitted to hospital, following a stabbing incident at the St Albans Correctional Centre outside Port Elizabeth on Sunday morning.
The Department says in a statement it is alleged that an inmate, who initiated the attack, has died following a scuffle with officials.
It says the crime scene has been cordoned off in order for the police to gather evidence and conduct its own investigation.
The Department says it will be monitoring the centre and ensure that the situation is stabilized urgently.
Senior Management of the Department was on the way to St Albans where it would be fully briefed on the incident
The Department says more details will be provided once the preliminary investigation has been completed.
