Police in Gqeberha are searching for a man who allegedly stole someone's identity in order to purchase a luxury vehicle.
A spokesperson for police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says it is alleged that on the 16th of February 2023, a financial institution received a request to finance a 2020 white Mercedes-Benz GLE 400D Matic.
She says while this request was being processed the suspect was able to provide all the necessary information to allow the institution to conclude the sale agreement.
Janse van Rensburg says five days later, the alleged suspect arrived at the car dealership in Gqeberha to take ownership of the vehicle.
She says the dealership had no reason to suspect any foul play as the Bank paid them a total amount of R1 3 90 314. 00
Captain Janse van Rensburg says after a few days a man from Cape Town noticed a debit order on his bank account and immediately made enquiries.
She says it was then established that the documents provided by the alleged suspect were fraudulent.
The Gqeberha Vehicle Crime Investigating Unit is now seeking the community's assistance in tracing the suspect.
