Husband arrested for allegedly stabbing wife 23 times

The husband of a 38-year-old George woman who was brutally attacked and stabbed 23 times on Wednesday has been arrested in connection with the incident and will appear in the local magistrate's court again on Monday.

Police spokesman Captain Bernadine Steyn said the victim was walking to a parked Hyundai minibus under a carport next to her house at about 7.30am on Wednesday when she noticed two men next to the vehicle. One of the men stabbed her repeatedly in the face, neck and hands before both fled the scene in a white Nissan Hardbody bakkie.
The victim's 50-year-old husband Karl Stellenberg was arrested shortly after the attack on a gravel road near Groeneweide at about 9am and appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

"The arrest followed after a passerby contacted the George police informing them of an injured woman at a house in Watson Street. On arrival police officers found the victim next to a parked white Toyota Yaris in front of the house. She had open wounds to her face, neck and hands. She was taken to a local hospital and is in a stable but serious condition," Steyn said.
A description of the Nissan bakkie went out over the police radio and shortly after police officers tracked the vehicle and the suspect down.

George and Conville detectives as well as other police members managed to trace and arrest a second suspect - 47-year-old Jimmy Sampson from Parkdene at about 3.30pm on Wednesday. He too appeared in court on Thursday.
The matter was postponed to Monday and both suspects will remain in custody.
Police biological body fluid detection dog Oscar and his handler in the meantime found what could be the knife used during the attack. It was discovered in a patch of grass next to PW Botha Boulevard and was sent for forensic testing to confirm whether the blood on the knife is the victim's.
