Hundreds arrested in NMB Festive Season operations

Police in Nelson Mandela warned criminal to prepare themselves for a tough festive season as Safer Festive Season operations continue.

Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said since last Thursday to Friday, 18 December, 422 people were arrested for various crimes that include murder, rape, possession of drugs and the possession of suspected stolen property, among others.

She said a total of 21 firearms were also seized as well as four vehicles and a quantity of drugs.

Naidu said 49 people were arrested and fined for flouting the Disaster Management Act regulations for breaching curfew regulations as well as liquor-related transgressions.

“In other operations across the metro, the Detective Trio Task Team members arrested three house robbery suspects at their respective homes during the early hours of Friday morning.”

She said similar operations would continue during the festive period and beyond.

Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso said hotspot areas will be heavily policed to ensure law and order.

“No-go areas such as the beaches and public spaces as outlined in the Disaster Management Act will be policed to ensure compliance,” he said, while also appealing to motorists to obey the rules and arrive safely at their destinations.
