Humansdorp woman arrested for abandoning her baby

A 31-year-old woman was arrested just hours after a three-day old baby girl was found next to the N-2 near Jeffreys Bay Thursday afternoon.

The swift arrest was made by members of Humansdorp police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit after the baby was found by two hitchikers.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei says, they alerted the police who immediately sprang into action.

He said the woman was arrested in Humansdorp and would appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted murder and child abandonment.

Seekoei said the baby was in Humansdorp hospital and was doing well.

Meanwhile, two men were jailed for life in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court in East London.

Twenty-one-year-old Odwa Nama and 28-year-old Mkhululi Ndlela, were earlier found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and raping a 20 year old Mdantsane woman in February.

Mdantsane Cluster Commander Brigadier Stanley Bennett applauded the sterling work by Constable Lusanda Nka-tazo who recently won the national detective of the year award.
