A 27-year-old woman was sentenced in the Cape Town Regional Court to 15 years direct imprisonment for trafficking a 14-year-old girl from George.
The Hawks said Verona Kennedy was also sentenced on Friday on a charge of sexual exploitation.
Spokesperson, Zinzi Hani, said the court heard the evidence of the 14- year- old victim, who testified about her ordeal which started in 2013.
She said during that time the teenager, who was living in George, was recruited by Kennedy and traded to a foreign national, Christopher Chichoke.
Hani said Chichoke is reported to have given her drugs and forced her to work as a sex worker for him.
“The victim managed to escape one night and ran to the nearest police station where she registered a criminal case,” she said.
The two were arrested in 2015 and later released on bail, but Chichoke fled the country and is now a wanted person.
Hani said Kennedy was rearrested in 2018 and remained in custody throughout her trial.
