A 30-year-old suspect is under police guard in hospital after being shot in the leg during a break-in in Seaview, Port Elizabeth.
The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a security company responded when the alarm at a residence in Reinette Street, Seaview, was triggered around 04h30.
The 45-year-old complainant had noticed that the bedroom light in another room was on and waited for the alarm company to arrive.
It was then established that entry to the house had been gained through a lounge window which was forced open.
Two laptops and other household items had been taken.
Colonel Naidu says the two security guards scanned the nearby bushes and one of them encountered the two suspects on a footpath.
When he ordered them to stop, one suspect dropped the bag and ran off leaving his accomplice behind.
Its alleged that the remaining suspect advanced towards the security official with a knife.
The suspect was shot in the leg and a bag containing a laptop was found nearby.
Colonel Naidu said the suspect was being detained on a charge of housebreaking and possession of suspected stolen property and that police had also opened a case of attempted murder with regard to the shooting as per standard procedure.
Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, commended the security officials for their swift reaction and apprehension of the suspect.
