A racehorse has been killed at Fairview racecourse outside of Port Elizabeth following a protest by grooms on Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says initial reports indicated that the animal was beaten and stabbed.
She says 28 horses were released from the stables on Thursday morning, but most have been recovered.
The search for the remaining horses is continuing.
Naidu says Pops unit members used stun grenades to disperse the protesters and were now monitoring the situation.
