Police in George are trying to identify the body of a man that has been found in the Outeniqua Mountains.

Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies says a group of hikers found the body high up the mountain near the Tonnelbos trail on Tuesday.

Spies says the body was airlifted by helicopter on Wednesday after emergency services were alerted and the team commenced a recovery operation.

He says the man has two tattoos - one on the left side of the neck and one on his right arm that looks like a dragon.

An autopsy must still be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Spies says anyone with information should contact the George police station.

The deceased was dressed in Tekkies, tracksuit pants and a top.

Two tattoos are still visible with one on the left side of the neck and most possibly a dragon on the right-hand arm.
