High-speed chase ends in abalone bust

Police in Gqeberha arrested a man and seized hundreds of units of abalone following a high-speed chase on Sunday evening.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said members of the Flying Squad received information about abalone being transported in a white Hyundai i20, and while on patrol spotted the vehicle.

She said when the driver noticed the police vehicle he sped off and a high-speed chase ensued.

Janse Van Rensburg said the suspect drove “extremely recklessly” before losing control of the vehicle at the intersection of Harrower Road and Brock Road following a tyre burst.

She said he attempted to flee but was arrested.

“During the search of the vehicle the members confiscated two bags containing 516 units of abalone with an estimated value of R80 000.00.

“According to the police system the vehicle was reported stolen during September in the Mount Road policing precinct,” Janse Van Rensburg added.

She said the suspect was detained on charges of “attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving, possession of abalone, and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle”.
