Hawks confirm ransom demand made in GQ kidnapping

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape confirmed that a ransom demand was made after a 20-year-old foreign national student was kidnapped in Gelvan Park in Gqeberha on Saturday night.

However, the ransom amount was not revealed.

Hawks’ spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said the student was still missing.

In an earlier statement police said that Qays Mohamed Hersi Mohamoud was abducted by gunmen in two cars who boxed-in his VW Tiguan on the corner of Aubrey Street and Kobus Road at around 7pm on Saturday.

Mohamoud was bundled into another car, while a passenger in his vehicle was left behind.

The abudction was reported at SAPS Gelvandale, and the VW Tiguan was impounded for further investigation.

Mhlakuvana said police were appealing to anyone who may know his whereabouts to contact their nearest police station or CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
