Police in Gqeberha have arrested three suspects following a dramatic chase where shots were fired during rush hour traffic.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the drama unfolded at 3 pm on Tuesday when police received information about a suspicious silver Nissan Micra with three occupants parked in Crawford street in North End.
She says police responded and when the suspects spotted them they sped off towards the M4 freeway.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the K9 unit provided back up and a chase ensued.
She says in Burman Road, Deal Party, police noticed a suspect throwing a jacket and unknown object out of the car window.
The K9 unit stopped to investigate and found an R5 rifle with serial numbers filed off including a pistol with ammunition.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says police then forced the vehicle into a cul de sac but the driver managed to turn the car around and headed back onto the N2 driving into oncoming traffic.
She says the K9 unit picked up the chase and shots were fired towards the tyres to get the car to stop.
The suspects aged between 20 and 28 were arrested and will appear in court soon on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso commended the teams for their brilliant partnership.
