Helicopter crash victim identified

Police have identified the pilot who was killed in a helicopter crash on Tuesday morning as the 65-year-old Nico Heyns of George.

He died when his Huey helicopter went down near Vermaalikheid in the Hessequa Municipality while assisting with fire-fighting operations in the area.

Heyns, who was flying for Working On Fire, was alone in the aircraft.

Riversdale police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.

The Civil Aviation Authority has already commenced with its probe into the cause of the accident.
