Seven coaches of the Phelophepa II Healthcare Train derailed close to Adelaide in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday evening.
A spokesperson for Transnet Ayanda Shezi says the globally acclaimed train was on its way to Mthatha for a planned community visit.
She says the initial indication is that the derailment was a result of heavy rainfall in the area over the past few weeks which may have affected the formation of the track.
Shezi says the recent floods in most parts of the country has had an adverse impact on the rail network across many parts of the country, with parts of the network submerged underwater in some provinces.
She says there was skeleton staff on board comprising of essential personnel, security and the driver.
One security guard sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene.
Transnet says a comprehensive investigation is being undertaken to establish the cause of the derailment.
Phelophepa I is unaffected and will continue with scheduled service while the Phelophepa II will be restored once the
train is declared safe for operations.
Both trains have played a significant part in the fight against Covid-19 as thousands of people have received their jabs from the train.
