The Eastern Cape Health Department has suspened three officials amid a probe into a petrol card scam.
Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says the department and a private forensic firm began a probe, after irregularities were noted in the petrol bills of ambulances in the province.
He says in one case an ambulance would travel 10 kilometres, but more than R2 000 was charged to the petrol card for that vehicle.
Kupelo says they suspect that ambulance staff are part of a syndicate in the province scamming the Department for fuel.
He says over 20 ambulances were linked to the alleged fuel card abuse, but he's not sure how many people are involved.
