Eastern Cape Department of Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth has sent her condolences to the families of the two EMS paramedics who were killed in a head-on collision on the N10 national road between Cookhouse and Cradock at the weekend
The ambulance they were travelling in collided with a Scania truck travelling in the opposite direction shortly after 6am on Saturday.
Police have named the two Cradock-based EMS paramedics as 36-year-old Thembelani Damane and 43-year-old Ntombehlubi Rasmeni and the truck driver as 39-year-old Silas Molena Dlamini.
All three victims died on the scene.
The two EMS personnel were on their way back to Cradock after they had transported patients to Gqeberha when the accident happened.
The MEC described the fatal accident as a big blow not only to the families, but also to the Department of Health and the Eastern Cape province.
"We are saddened by this tragic loss as we were still expecting that they would continue dedicating their lives to saving lives," said MEC Meth.
"Their contribution towards moving the healthcare service forward in the Eastern Cape will never be erased and we will forever be grateful for their selfless service."
Details of a Memorial service for the two paramedics are still being finalised.
