Operations at the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality's Budget and Treasury offices were halted momentarily earlier on Tuesday when the Hawks ordered municipal employees to evacuate the premises and leave their computers switched on.
Hawks Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed the incident.
She said the raid was linked to the R15 million Lesseyton Sports Facility that was built in the municipality.
The probe into the construction of the stadium started after the municipality received major backlash at its unveiling in October 2021.
Images circulated on social media from angry residents alleging that the dry, bumpy field with metal stands and soccer and rugby uprights could not have costed R15 million.
Captain Mgolodela said municipal operations have since gone back to normal, after officers in nine Hawks vehicles evacuated the premises on Tuesday morning.
