Hawks launch investigation after R50 million cocaine washed up on beach

The Organised crime unit in George and the Hawks have started a probe into what seems to be raw, unprocessed cocaine that had recently been found along the Southern Cape coast.

The first drum filled with R25 million rand worth of cocaine washed up on a beach in hartenbos on the 31st of December. The second drum washed up on new years day.

All the confiscated drugs with a total estimated value of R50m will be send to the forensic laboratory for tests.

No one has been linked or arrested in connection with the find.

Anyone who may have information regarding these finds is requested to call the investigating officer, W/O Henkie Rhode of the Hawks at 044 802 1600, 082 8509 822 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information will be dealt with in a confidential manner.

Western Cape Provincial management has thanked those members of the public who relayed the suspicious parcels they spotted immediately to the police. We furthermore urge beachgoers, holidaymakers and those on sea, especially along the Southern Cape Coast, to always be vigilant and report suspicious parcels on the beaches or elsewhere immediate to the nearest police station or Crime Stop. Please do not handle suspicious parcels as it can be greatly harmful when exposed to it. Rather allow us, the police, to do a thorough investigation into the find, nature and origin of the potential drug(s).
