Gym deal to get more cops in shape

National police commissioner Fannie Masemola during a fitness demonstration with SAPS members on Wednesday.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) may soon be fitter, faster, and more flexible on the job.

This comes after the SAPS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Virgin Active and Planet Fitness on Wednesday, in a bid to encourage employees to remain physically fit and healthy.

The purpose of the MOU is to benefit police officers to access and utilise the facilities of the two gyms at a discounted fee.

Speaking at the SAPS Academy in Tshwane after the signing, General Fannie Masemola said members will receive a 20% discount on a monthly gym membership.

The discount will also apply to all existing members.

"Given the current economic situation in the country, where every rand and every cent counts, this comes in handy for all of us.

'Masemola further said that police officers operate in a highly stressful environment, hence finding a healthy outlet for their stress is important.

He added that many officers who try to transition from Public Service Act personnel to fully-fledged members of the SAPS failed the accompanying fitness test.
